HYPE: Adriano Giannini AGE: 31. BIRTHPLACE: Italy. THE SON ALSO RISES: This fall Adriano Giannini will star as a "very passionate, very Italian" sailor who becomes stranded on a remote island with a bone-chillingly bitchy socialite (played by Madonna) in director Guy Ritchie's Swept Away--a remake of the 1975 film that starred Giannini's father, Italian screen icon Giancarlo Giannini, in the same role. FEAR FACTOR: "I was a little bit afraid of acting in the beginning, because my father is a famous actor," he says. "Maybe I was a little bit like, 'OK, let's start with something else...let's take it easy, and then we'll see.'" FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS: That "something else" turned out to be working as a camera operator for nine years on movies as varied as Cutthroat Island and The Talented Mr. Ripley. Finally acceding to the acting bug after completing Ripley, Giannini ducked into acting school and quickly found roles in a pair of small Italian films. WORSHIPPING THE MADONNA: "I was nervous to work with Madonna, but she made me feel at ease, you know, immediately. She's very nice. She's...queenly [laughs]. I would love to do, like, 10 movies with her." PARENTAL ADVISORY: "My father always told me to study, and be serious, but not to take things too seriously. To see the irony in acting, in life. I think that's the best way to look at it. Otherwise, it can be too much, you know?" |
