Al Pacino on Lawrence Grobel's new book

Al Pacino: In Conversation with Lawrence Grobel (Simon Spotlight Entertainment) comes out the same month as the September issue of Hollywood Life, with Grobel's interview with Al Pacino inside. Grobel, who has conducted over 80 interviews for Movieline & Hollywood Life, has known Pacino since 1979, when he first interviewed him, and since then they have become close friends. Still, Grobel does his best to maintain his objectivity when he puts what they say in print. Hollywood Life asked Grobel to ask his friend Pacino what he thought about the book. We know Pacino agreed to write a foreword, and he also allowed some of his childhood pictures to be in the insert. But what did he really think about having four decades of conversations put between hard covers?

GROBEL: How do you feel about all the pieces I've written about you over the last quarter century, which Simon & Schuster is publishing as a book this month?

PACINO: I know you so well, Larry--you've been around so often--I don't know what to say about it. There comes a point where you hope in all our conversations that certain things come off that people can enjoy. I want it to be interesting. We have such a long relationship--you've done so much writing about me... I have no idea how I feel. I'm glad it's coming out because it doesn't feel like a gossipy book, it's got some substance, it's got a reality to it.

GROBEL: You were nice enough to write a foreword to the book. That's not something you normally do. Was it hard or easy to write?

PACINO: I'm not a writer. It's hard for me to write a sentence. So it was difficult. But I like to go into things that are difficult now. I used to shy away from such things, but you forced me into doing it, and I had fun with it. It was like learning to ride a bike. You feel good about it. I haven't gotten that with ice skating yet.

GROBEL: How many more interviews do you think we'll do over the next ten years?

PACINO: I'll probably be interviewing you for your movie, now that you've written one. Let's hope it turns around and I'll start questioning you. That would be full circle, wouldn't it? I'm looking forward to it. I'll have a talk show in the future and you can come on as a guest.
