Roller Date

by Kevin Maynard

Though they've got all the right moves when they're in the roller rink together, Alexandra Holden and Shane West aren't actually a couple. Alexandra, who played David Schwimmer's girlfriend on "Friends," is married to actor/musician Johnny Strong, and Shane, who plays Eli on "Once and Again," is dating a girl in the Industry. The secret to their good chemistry? They've been pals for years.

Alexandra met Shane five years ago when he dating her then-roomie, Rachael Leigh Cook. Ever since this talented twosome--she's 23, he's 22--has gone to premieres and even worked together.

"Alex played my love interest for two episodes of "'Once and Again,'" says Shane. "Then she cheated on me. Needless to say, they haven't brought her character back."

Never mind, Alex is keeping busy, having just starred opposite Mena Suvari in Sugar and Spice. Shane has been movies happening, too--he starred with Omar Epps in Dracula 2000 and will appear in Get Over It (opposite Kirsten Dunst) and A Time for Dancing (with Shiri Appleby).

Adapted from the fourth part of a classic five-part novel by Wang Du Lu and shot in the interior of mainland China, the film costars Chow Yun-Fat, the world's most popular movie star, and is directed by Taiwan-born and Hollywood-tested Ang Lee (The Wedding Banquet, Sense and Sensibility, The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil). It's a mesmerizing mix of dynastic history, romance, drama, transcendence and the most balletic and pulsating fight scenes you've ever seen.

"From the beginning," Yeoh says, "we had to deal with the question, 'How do we keep our Chinese audience happy while at the same time letting the rest of the world embrace our culture, our myths?'" Lee's answer was to open the film not with the usual over-the-top chop-fest but with a gentle, character-driven scene in which we're educated about the Tao and lulled into a fantasy world where gravity-defying magic seems perfectly natural.
