Basquiat

by Stephen Farber

Basquiat is a stillborn biography of the street-style painter who was adopted by Andy Warhol. Painter Julian Schnabel may have been too close to the subject, and he is too inexperienced a director to supply any energy. Schnabel never establishes Basquiat's gifts as an artist or the emotional bond he had with Warhol (played by David Bowie in a fright wig), two essential elements that the film must have in order to involve us. Jeffrey Wright's opaque, inexpressive performance is no help whatsoever.
