A Bronx Tale

by Stephen Farber

A Bronx Tale finds a surprising amount of vitality in another story of an Italian boy growing up under the wing of the neighborhood godfather. In his directing debut, Robert De Niro (who also plays the boy's straight-arrow father) doesn't show any visual flair, but his casting is a triumph. The two actors who play the impressionable young hero--9-year-old Francis Capra and 17-year-old Lillo Brancato--are both extraordinary.
