A Merry War

by Stephen Farber

A Merry War is adapted from an early George Orwell novel about an aspiring poet determined to live an unconventional life, even if that means alienating everyone who crosses his path. The film is shrewd enough to realize that this self-proclaimed artiste is a royal pain even when his protests against bourgeois life hits the bull's-eye. The script is witty, and a top-flight cast headed by Richard E. Grant and Helena Bonham Carter makes the most of it.
