Article 99

by Stephen Farber

Grizzled veterans of World War II and younger Vietnam vets inhabit a mismanaged VA hospital in Article 99, a hard-edged look at the bureaucratic chaos that is destroying medical care in penny-pinching times. the film has a fresh subject and an unusually strong cast that includes Ray Liotta, Eli Wallach, Kathy Baker, John Mahoney and Keith David, but it also has an incoherent script that seems to have been edited with a meat cleaver. The mixture of black humor and pathos recalls M*A*S*H but doesn't achieve the same impudence.
