The Ballad of Little Jo

by Stephen Farber

The Ballad of Little Jo. Cross-dressing is chic at the movies, and this Western about a woman who spends her life masquerading as a cowboy offers up a novel variation on a suddenly popular theme. Maggie Greenwald's handsomely photographed film sputters in its early stretches but achieves erotic intensity and poignancy in the scenes detailing Jo's forbidden romance with a Chinese man. Suzy Amis hasn't really come alive in her other movies, but she takes on a newfound authority in drag.
