The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack

by Stephen Farber

The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack is a flavorful documentary about cowboy balladeer Ramblin' Jack Elliott, born Elliott Adnopoz, the son of a Jewish doctor. The story of Elliott's transformation is an astonishing tribute to the American capacity for reinventing oneself, though the man's devotion to his fantasy clearly took its toll on the people closest to him. Directed by his daughter Aiyana, the film interweaves Elliott's history with contemporary scenes of Aiyana trying--but repeatedly failing--to penetrate her father's Ramblin' Jack mystique.
