The Beans of Egypt, Maine

by Stephen Farber

The Beans of Egypt, Maine is the latest variation on Tobacco Road--the saga of a lecherous, dirt-poor family of outsiders in rural New England. The script meanders, and there are some major missteps, like the casting of Rutger Hauer as the proletarian patriarch. But there are also some potent sexual scenes from a woman's point of view and good performances by Martha Plimpton as the heroine and Patrick McGaw as her no-good husband.
