The Big Lebowski

by Stephen Farber

Hot off their triumph with Fargo, the Coen brothers take a giant step backward with the misfired The Big Lebowski. Like many of their early efforts, it's a riff on old movies in this case, hard-boiled detective movies that quickly turns arch. Jeff Bridges gives a game performance as an aging, stoned radical, and there are funny supporting turns by Julianne Moore, David Huddleston and John Turturro. On the other hand, John Goodman is several miles over the top as Bridges's obnoxious crony.
