Jesus' Son by Chris Phillips Billy Crudup gives all other Best Actor hopefuls a run for their money in this darkly funny, realistic look at drug addiction. Based on Denis Johnson's book, Jesus' Son tells the story of FH (Crudup), a wandering slacker who gets sucked into the 1970s drug culture. Director Alison MacLean doesn't pull any punches with the camera: we get overdoses, wigged-out dope fiends, knife wounds to the head, you name it. All of this would be thoroughly depressing if not for the wicked sense of humor on display. As the woman who gets Crudup started on his downward spiral, Samantha Morton is as good as she was in Sweet and Lowdown, and John Black is a hoot as Crudup's equally screwed-up pal. Ultimately, though, the film belongs to Crudup. Whether smashing a house to shreds while on a bender or silently listening outside a window as a woman sings in the shower, Crudup throws his all into every scene, and the result is nothing short of miraculous. The junkies in Trainspotting may have seemed as distant as they could be, but Crudup makes his character's desperation and ultimate redemption feel frighteningly close to home.
